Fly fishing with the mayfly
It is May and a very fascinating fishing is imminent, because every year from mid-May to mid-June there is the chance for a short time to fish on various rivers in Europe with large mayfly patterns, so-called "may flies".
The Wiesent in Franconian Switzerland is probably the most famous "mayfly river" in Germany with a very long tradition. But great Mayfly fishing is also possible on the Blau, Mangfall, Alz, Sinn, Chiemsee and many other meadow streams and chalk rivers!
Fishing can be breathtaking and spectacular on the one hand, but also nerve wracking and extremely challenging on the other. Tales of mayfly fishing put a sparkle in the eyes of many fly fishermen. You hear stories that seem almost impossible.
The main characters are mostly large brown trout, which are difficult to catch. In late spring there is a rare chance of catching a dream fish on the surface with a large imitation Mayfly (Ephemera Danica)!

Mayfly Equipment required – recommendations:
Fly rod for mayfly fishing:
We recommend a fly rod length of 9 feet (275cm). Sometimes a 9'6 ft (290) rod can be helpful for easier casting over tall bank grass.
Fly reel for mayfly fishing:
In principle, almost any fly reel with a larger spool core is suitable here. This means the line curls less and you can get to the fish faster with your line. The fly reel should have a good but gentle drag in case a strong brown trout grabs your mayfly imitation!
Fly line:
Basically any floating trout line is suitable. The RIO Gold has proven itself for years and the line has a large fan base. The line also transports larger Mayfly patterns with no problem.
Leaders:
The standard length is 9ft (275cm) of a monofilament tapered nylon leader. Sometimes it may be a good idea to extend this leader a little with a leader ring. We recommend a leader thickness of 0.16mm, 0.18mm or even 0.20mm for large fish. For particularly delicate fish, we recommend a fluorocarbon leader.
Most important accessories:
Clearly the floatant (floating agent/fly grease) Nev-R-Sink. This needs to be applied to the dry fly from the fly box. Then the mayfly imitation or the ascender swims very long and well.
Best tip: We like to fish our may flies very actively! i.e. we rarely fish the patterns just drifting quietly. Quite the opposite! Be sure to breathe life into the Mayfly on the water. It helps to observe the natural insect on the surface of the water. The Mayfly often tries to take off or just breaks through the surface. This is the right moment and the trout are going crazy! Be sure to try it out!

Tippet Rings (Pitzenbauer Ringerl)

These small, extremely strong rings were made public by the famous fly fisherman Edgar Pitzenbauer and used in the grayling fishing. Meanwhile, these rings have spread all over the world among fly fishermen.
They are tied to the end of your leader (conical, braided or linear) and allow you again and again to re-tie your leader at the end, without shortening the length of the leader. The individual rings are rounded inside and out and are therefore very smooth. These rings have no solder joint. Thus, a "break point" was prevented and the surface remains very smooth. The rings are extremely light and durable. Also suitable for floating leaders.
Especially modern Nymph fishermen use these rings in an enormously wide range of applications. By using it, you will ultimately save money, as your leaders will only have to shorten their fly changes in the front leader material. In addition, the field of application is very diverse. You can use these rings to tie in Springer flies or pike felts, or even use them when drop shot fishing.
Recommendation: we strongly advise you to use the rings when using Fluorocarbon leaders / leader material in combination with regular nylon, as this material is apt to cut through the surface hardness of other types of nylon. With a leader ring that does not happen anymore.
Even with the use of polyleaders / Versileaders the use of the leader rings is recommended because it no longer shortens the polyleader and the life can be increased enormously.

Überall dort, wo die Maifliege (Ephemera danica) in nennenswerter Zahl vorkommt und in Massenemergenz schlüpft, wird diese, nur wenige Wochen dauernde Zeit, als Höhepunkt des Fliegenfischerjahres betrachtet. Es ist ein Schauspiel von besonderem Reiz, Schlupf und Hochzeitsflug der schönen Danica zu erleben. Die Reaktion der Fische auf dieses Ereignis ist spektakulär. Es ist die Zeit, in der auch kapitale Fische trocken zu fangen sind. Mit dem richtigen Muster! Denn bei dem riesigen Angebot natürlicher Maifliegen, stellen sich die Fische oft auf bestimmte Stadien ein und bei der Musterwahl kommt es auf Feinheiten an. Fast immer geben die Fische Auskriechern und Duns den Vorzug vor den eiablegenden Weibchen und deren Spents, die oft in riesigen Mengen - völlig unbeachtet - in Hinterwassern oder im Stau vor Wehren zusammengestrudelt werden. Deshalb habe ich meine beiden Danica-Muster auf Auskriecher und Dun beschränkt. Unter kräftigem Schlagen ihres Abdomens steigen die schlupfreifen Nymphen an die Wasseroberfläche, durchbrechen die Oberflächenspannung und kriechen unverzüglich aus der Nymphenhaut. Das Auskriechen und Entfalten der Flügel dauert durchweg nur Sekunden. Doch diese kurze Zeitspanne totaler Hilflosigkeit gibt den Fischen Gelegenheit, sich ohne große Mühe zu bedienen. Der CDC-Mayfly-Emerger ahmt dieses attraktive Stadium glaubhaft nach: Die Loop-Wing-Montage imitiert die sich entfaltenden Flügel, während das Abdomen der Fliege durch die bewußt kürzer gehaltenen Cerci etewas tiefer im Film liegt. Das Muster wird an langer Vorfachspitze ruhig und oh ne zu dreggen im Film gefischt.
