Fly Backing Dacron
RIO Dacron® Backing is a high-quality braided backing line for fly reels. The proven Dacron material combines high strength, low stretch and a smooth, consistent braid.Backing connects your fly reel and fly line while providing additional line capacity when a strong fish makes a long run. It also fills the reel spool and helps achieve the desired arbor diameter for your fly line.RIO's traditional braid offers a good balance between a thin diameter and easy handling. It is easy to knot and the construction is suitable for making blind splice loops. We offer RIO Dacron Backing on practical 100 yd spools, equivalent to approximately 91.4 metres. Choose between 20 lb and 30 lb strengths and the highly visible Chartreuse and Orange colours.Details of the RIO Dacron BackingBraided Dacron backing for fly reelsHigh strengthLow stretchSmooth, consistent braidEasy to knotSuitable for blind splice loopsLength: 100 yds, approx. 91.4 mStrengths: 20 lb (9.1 kg) and 30 lb (13.6 kg)Colors: Chartreuse and Orange

A new production process has allowed us to produce a backing that, even when loaded tightly onto the spool, doesn‘t cut into the backing beneath it forming a weak spot. There are times when a fluorescent coloured backing is a great advantage. It is essential, especially when fighting very large species, to be able to track the path of a running fish. A coloured fluorescent backing helps you to do this. This is not only true for saltwater fly fishing, it also applies to Salmon, Pike, Steelhead and large Trout. Gel Spun Backing 65lb 300yds chartreuse
RIO's premium 65lb, 8 carrier backing is made of the finest materials from Japan. 8 strands of tightly woven fibers makes for a round backing that stacks perfectly on the fly reel. The result is a stronger, softer and smoother performance backing. The bright multicolored backing changes color every 10 meters and compliments fly reels with a beautiful splash of color and functionality. The breaking strain and diameter make this a perfect choice for all fishing, from pan fish to ultra-big game such as GT's, billfish and tarpon. Length: 300 yds / 274 m Color: chartreuse

Super Backing 45 lbs (yellow)
A few years ago we asked ourselves how we could make a good backing even better. After analysing the most important requirements for a backing we discovered that these were an even greater tensile strength - at a lower volume, a longer life, UV stability and very strong knot strength. We tested various materials and the breakthrough came when we combined a new braiding technique with a high performance thread. The result is the best backing that we know of. The main advantage is that even though it has a very small diameter, it has the quality to flatten out on the reel. This means no more cutting through itself! The tensile strength is 40 % higher, the diameter 35 % less than conventional backing and the fluorescent colour is easily visible. The tensile strength is 45 lbs (approx. 21 kg)! This may appear exorbitant to some Trout anglers but, even in this situation, our Super Backing does have the advantage of the fish feeling less water pressure on the line, during long runs and drills. When fly fishing for larger fish this advantage becomes even more apparent.

Backing for Fly Reels
Backing provides a reserve of line behind your fly line. It connects the fly line to your reel and gives you extra capacity when a powerful fish runs beyond the full length of your fly line. It also fills the spool beneath the fly line to achieve a suitable spool fill. At Rudi Heger, you will find high-quality backing from RIO Products and TRAUN RIVER in different breaking strengths, lengths and colours.
Which Backing Suits Your Setup?
The right choice depends on your target species, fly line and reel capacity. Diameter matters alongside breaking strength: thinner backing allows you to fit a longer reserve onto the same spool.
- Traditional backing: Proven braided options, including Dacron backing, offer a practical balance of strength, handling and ease of knotting.
- Gel-spun backing (GSP): High breaking strength with a small diameter – particularly useful when you need substantial backing capacity or spool space is limited.
- High-visibility colours: Bright colours make it easier to follow the line and see which direction a fish is running.
Choosing Backing Strength and Capacity
Backing rated at 20 lb is a common choice for many trout and grayling setups. For larger fish and more demanding applications, 30 lb or stronger options may be appropriate. The important thing is to balance the complete system of reel, fly line, backing and leader.
Use your reel manufacturer’s capacity figures as a starting point when choosing how much backing to fit. These figures refer to a particular fly line and backing size. Leave enough room for the entire fly line without it rubbing against the frame. When targeting fish known for long runs, allow for a larger backing reserve.
