The 12 Best Flies for the Bavarian Traun in Spring
Spring on the Bavarian Traun—the days are getting longer, the water clearer, and the fish more active.
Now is one of the best times of year for fly fishing on the Bavarian Traun!
For fly fishermen, one of the most exciting times of the year is just beginning.
But which fly patterns really deliver success on the Traun in the spring?
Here we show you the 12 best flies you should have in your box—recommended by the experts at Rudi Heger!
These fly patterns work not only in the spring on the Traun, but throughout Bavaria, Austria, Switzerland, and the entire Alpine region!
Why the right fly is so crucial in the spring
Especially in spring, fishing on the Traun can be challenging (during cold snaps) or a breeze (during warm spells)—it depends heavily on weather and water conditions as to how actively the fish are feeding:
- The water is often still cold and clear.
- Insects (especially mayflies and stoneflies) begin to hatch.
- Trout and grayling respond to natural presentations—and to the right patterns.
- After a long winter, trout are often actively and increasingly searching for food.
Our recommendation: Rely on a mix of proven dry flies for rising fish and effective nymphs for fishing just above the bottom.
The 6 Best Dry Flies for Spring on the Traun
The Bavarian Traun is one of Germany’s most renowned fly-fishing waters. If you want to catch trout or grayling here, you’ll need the right dry flies.
Below you’ll find the six most proven patterns that are particularly successful on the Traun.
1. Adams Dry Fly
The Adams is a true classic among dry flies. Its versatile silhouette mimics many native insect species and appeals to both trout and grayling.2. CDC Caddis Teenager
This fly is particularly effective in strong currents and mimics an insect just emerging or a newly hatched insect. The buoyant hair ensures a perfect presentation on the water’s surface—ideal for the Traun.3. CDC Emerger, beige
The CDC Emerger is simple but extremely effective. It mimics an insect just emerging from the water’s surface. It is particularly suitable for calm stretches and is often recommended by experienced Traun anglers.4. Missing Link Dry Fly
The Missing Link is no longer an insider tip, but it’s still very effective! This dry fly should be in every Traun angler’s fly box.5. CDC Mayfly Emerger (in smaller sizes)
This pattern imitates early mayflies during the emergence and is indispensable in the spring.6. Stealth Link BWO
The Stealth Link BWO (Blue-winged Olive) can be used year-round. It works particularly well on cloudy days and in light rain.Characteristics of the real insects: dull, upward-pointing wings. Tip: When choosing your dry flies, pay attention to the current insect hatching conditions on the Traun.
Local fly fishermen are happy to provide information on the best patterns of the season.
Conclusion:
With these six dry flies, you’ll be perfectly equipped to successfully outwit trout and grayling on the Bavarian Traun. Try out different patterns and adapt your selection to local conditions—that way, nothing stands in the way of your fishing success!Extra tip: Your dry flies should float well! Nev-R-Sink is our go-to floatant!
CDC Caddis Teenager
The CDC Caddis Teenager is a great pattern of a caddis fly. The fly floats very well due to the tying method. The fly pattern can be led very actively. We recommend treating the pattern with Nev-R-Sink (floating agent) before first use so that the fly floats even longer.
CDC Emerger (beige)
The "CDC Emerger" imitates the early emerging phase of a mayfly, the beginning of the hatching process. This process develops in the water film as soon as the ascender has broken the surface tension and ends with the emergence from the nymph skin onto the water surface. It begins with the bursting of the nymph skin on the back of the ascender. Then the front body (thorax) with the still crumpled wings and feet of the dun pushes out of the chitinous shell. In this phase, the emerger appears as a voluminous balloon from a fish's perspective. This stage, in which the emergers drift completely helplessly, signals safe prey to the fish. The pattern tied with an overemphasized thorax using the 'loop wing technique' effectively replicates this relatively short phase. In accordance with the natural models, this phase imitation is fished calmly in the current. The air trapped between the CDC (Cul de Canard) fibers gives the CDC emerger excellent buoyancy. Therefore, it can be fished without problems even in rough water. In calm currents, it is recommended to present the pattern deep in the film. It can also be easily pulled underwater and fished as an ascender just breaking the surface tension. The trapped air keeps the CDC emerger securely at the water's surface.
Missing Link (olive)
The Missing Link: Your Indispensable Dry FlyAn exceptionally versatile and effective dry fly that no fly box should be without. If we could only take one fly to the water, over 90% of the time, we'd choose a Missing Link. This incredibly successful dry fly, developed by Mike Mercer, has become a "secret weapon" among many fly fishers. Originally designed to imitate an emerging or dying caddisfly, it has proven capable of mimicking a wide range of insect stages. The Missing Link is more than just a dry fly – it's a true group pattern for mayflies and caddisflies! Its outstanding effectiveness comes from its ingenious imitation of various insect stages within these crucial groups. The wings of the Missing Link are positioned to mimic the wings of dying insects resting on or just below the water's surface. This helps the fly float upright and entices even the most selective fish. The unique profile gives fish the impression of a safe and attractive meal. The Missing Link is the ideal choice when you're looking for a reliable dry fly that coaxes fish to strike in diverse situations and even under challenging conditions.
CDC Mayfly Emerger
Stealth Link BWO
The STEALTH LINK fly pattern is the latest invention from fly tier Mike Mercer. These flies ar incredibly catchy and almost always lands correctly on the surface of the water due to the way it is tied. It is an extremely catchy group pattern for mayfly and caddisfly patterns. This pattern can be particularly effective with very shy fish. No glitter whatsoever ensures that even experienced fish take the fly unmolested. Color: Blue Winged Olive

Zubehör-Empfehlungen
Nev-R-Sink Powder
Simply place soaked flies, with leaders attached, into the container and shake. This removes water and coats the fly with powder floatant in one easy step. Then just blow away the material on the fly. Now the fly is ready to use again. It is dry and floats high again. Contents: 25 ml
Nev-R-Sink Floatant
Nev-R-Sink - it's just better! Nev-R-Sink has become a floatant legend in its own time. That it could be improved upon wasn't considered possible. Scientists didn't give up hope and carried on the extensive research. The result is Nev-R-Sink II. Your fly floats higher in the surface and even the finest CDC feathers aren't glued together. Contents: 15 ml
Tippet Rings (Pitzenbauer Ringerl)
These small, extremely strong rings were made public by the famous fly fisherman Edgar Pitzenbauer and used in the grayling fishing. Meanwhile, these rings have spread all over the world among fly fishermen. They are tied to the end of your leader (conical, braided or linear) and allow you again and again to re-tie your leader at the end, without shortening the length of the leader. The individual rings are rounded inside and out and are therefore very smooth. These rings have no solder joint. Thus, a "break point" was prevented and the surface remains very smooth. The rings are extremely light and durable. Also suitable for floating leaders. Especially modern Nymph fishermen use these rings in an enormously wide range of applications. By using it, you will ultimately save money, as your leaders will only have to shorten their fly changes in the front leader material. In addition, the field of application is very diverse. You can use these rings to tie in Springer flies or pike felts, or even use them when drop shot fishing. Recommendation: we strongly advise you to use the rings when using Fluorocarbon leaders / leader material in combination with regular nylon, as this material is apt to cut through the surface hardness of other types of nylon. With a leader ring that does not happen anymore. Even with the use of polyleaders / Versileaders the use of the leader rings is recommended because it no longer shortens the polyleader and the life can be increased enormously.
