Fly Fishing for Bonefish
Equipment tips for fishing for Bonefish
Basically, there are three ways to arrange a saltwater fishing trip as a fly fisherman:
– Booking through a fly fishing tour operator (all-in-one solution)– Booking a holiday with the aim to go fishing 2-3 days on site.
– Complete DIY (Do it Yourself) fly fishing trip
Premium Fly Rods recommendations:
SAGE 890-4 X Fly Rod – # 8, 275cm, four parts
– currently the best rod for bonefish fishing
SAGE 890-4 SALT HD Fly Rod – # 8, 275cm four parts
– This rod series was specially developed for saltwater fishing and impresses with its power
Alternatives for the smaller purse:
SAGE ONE 890-4 Fly Rod – # 8, 275cm, 4 parts
– As a discontinued model, this rod is currently available at a very good price
REDINGTON Predator II 890-4 Fly Rod – # 8, 275cm, four parts
– Here you get very good performance for your money. This rod is perfect for entry or as a second rod
Fly reels for fly fishing in salt water on Bonefish & Co
When it comes to saltwater fishing, there are a few important things to keep in mind with fly reels: in principle, the reels should be 100% saltwater resistant and the braking system should be enclosed. This does not mean that the rolls should not be rinsed off with fresh water after daily use!
The daily care is very important because the salt water is very hard on the gear. In addition, the reels should all have a very good (strong and gentle) brake. The runs of the fish can sometimes be unreal and are hardly comparable to fish species in fresh water. In addition, the reels should have a large core and a fairly high backing capacity (+150 m). It can happen that a Bonefish tears 100 meter line from the reel in a run. Not to mention a medium-sized Tarpon or GT ... you should also be prepared for that.
It is best to use GSP (Gel Spun Backing, for example Super Backing) in saltwater fishing to minimize the risk of fish loss.
Premium Fly Reels recommendations:
SAGE SPECTRUM MAX Fly Reels
– the top model of the SAGE fly reels masters every task, however challenging. The carbon brake pads and the perfectly adjustable brake make the drill almost a breeze.
TIBOR Signature 7-8 Fly Reels
– These reels have a legendary reputation. No other fly reel brand caught more IGFA world records.
Alternatives for the smaller purse:
SAGE SPECTRUM Fly Reel
– This reel series is characterized by its very good price-performance ratio.
REDINGTON RISE 7/8
– With this reel, REDINGTON also convinces friends of saltwater fishing
REDINGTON Behemoth 7/8
– This reel is the best choice for a casual saltwater fisherman. The braking force for the price is unparalleled.
REDINGTON GRANDE 7/8
– This reel series is characterized by its very good price-performance ratio. Here you get a very good reel for at an very affordable price.
Fly lines for fly fishing in salt water on Bonefish & Co
In the vast majority of cases, a floating Weight Forward line (WF) is used when fishing on the flats, but shooting heads can also be used.

SALT R8 Fly Rod
MORE FIGHT, MORE TOUCH Most salt rods are built for pure power and ultimate strength—that is table stakes for the venue and the discipline. With SAGEs new R8 graphite, adding 25% more strength-per-weight was the easy part—a simple function of material advancement—but one that also increased the fight in the rod even down to our six-weight. SAGE increased the pure pulling power without the need to add more material, fillers or reinforcement. The outcome is simple, providing the ability for faster landing times and reducing fish stress and catch-and-release pressure on ever so delicate ecosystems. More strength and fight were an obvious upgrade, yet few salt rods, especially in the heavier weights, achieve the importance of feel for fine touch shots and precise presentations. Shaping a taper that brought this increased touch into the equation took more time. Yet after a long residence in the birthplace of saltwater fly fishing, and working directly with the experienced guides there, our rod designers found the right profile and fiber alignment that delivered strength, fine touch presentation, and a more intuitive sweet spot to a class of rods that have long had a reputation as unwieldy, unforgiving and difficult. With the SALT R8, gone are the days of sacrificing the feel and touch in your saltwater rod. Whether maximizing your limited shots for Tarpon or blocking the right moon cycle for a Permit trip—or just delivering a quick, confident cast through wind at distance—saltwater is a game where patience and urgency are equally critical to maximizing opportunity. Whether on idyllic flats, coastal beaches or backcountry mangroves, you need faith—in your cast, your reaction time and your choice of rod. While saltwater locales often move slower, the fishing is faster, the pressure more intense and the variables more variable. From wind, weather and tides to spooky fish, seasonal migrations and salty guides, it’s a different game with a different set of rules in venues that range from tournaments and Grand Slam flats to legendary bonefish lodges and hushed redfish beaches. The shots are fewer, the stakes are higher and seconds matter in sight fishing. By the third false cast, your time—at least for that fish—has passed. But more than just delivering a fly on demand, saltwater sight fisheries necessitate a different tool than what works for your standard trout stream. A rod that loads quickly and predictably, a sweet spot more intuitive to feel. More strength to land fish quicker and more touch for precision short shots. A more durable rod that is built to survive both long skiff runs and remote destinations - where broken rods are absolutely heartbreaking. A precisely honed taper that will ensure your fly is presented in the right place at the right time. For Sage, having Revolution 8 technology in hand meant now was the time to shape a dramatic advancement in saltwater rods that spoke to these truths right from the heart and birthplace of the discipline. R8 Core Fly Rod
SAGE R8 Core Fly Rods - the revolution MADE TO FISH NOT TO CAST R8 Core is focused on maximum versatility and applies new revolutionary R8 material technology through our forward-thinking lens of what we're seeing out on the water - where one rod needs to show even greater range. At its core, R8 Core traces a direct lineage to Sage's multi-application / fast action vision, one shaped by the fishing evolutions happening all around us—from habitats we stalk and waters we frequent, to the flies we fish and the diversity of species we now target. Coming in a range from 3wt to 9wt, with a variety of lengths from 8'6" to 10'0", there's sure to be a model to fit the core needs of every freshwater angler. R8 Technology The advanced, leading-edge material behind R8 enables us to shape a rod with a stiffer, stronger backbone but a more sensitive tip and more connected feel. The secret is twofold. First, a proprietary aerospace composite with a greater hoop strength enables us to dimensionally grow taper diameter more quickly from the tip—while a nano-sintered resin application increases axial resilience and allows us to pack more fiber into the blank, resulting in that true two-way connection from hand to fly and back for greater feel, flow and control. Revolution 8 Technology Silver Pine blank color Slate primary thread wraps with graduated White and Grey trim Fuji ceramic stripper guides with hard chromed snake guides and tip-top Laser etched line weight on slide band Black rod bag with new quick-tie cord lock for faster, easier, and cleaner storage Aluminum rod tube with Sage medallion 3WT - 6WT Premium Flor grade snub-nose half-wells cork handle Sustainable Ziricote wood insert with anodized aluminum up-locking reel seat 5WT - 9WT Premium Flor grade full-wells cork handle with cork/EVA fighting buttGunmetal anodized aluminum up-locking reel seatIntegrated hidden hook keeper in reel seatA fast action provides the capability to stay tight to the line and in control of the presentation, while the high line speed drives a tight loop that assists in laser accuracy in technical dry fly situations. With ability to handle dry fly lines with long heads, increasing loop control when carrying long lengths and making precise casts to rising fish, all while making it easier to turn over long leaders for technical feeders at range. Nymphing With a sensitive tip section to protect light tippets, a versatile balance between lifting power and delicacy provides perfect synergy for nymph fishing. A very effective tool for anglers that fish nymphs and indicators wading or out of a boat. With a combination of power and feel,R8 Core allows for intuitively better cast timing, easier line lifts and sharp, precise mends leading to faster reaction times when setting the hook. Streamers A powerful butt section easily throws a wide range of streamers and accommodates a full lineup of sinking tip lines while also quickly pulling aggressive fish out of structure for increased landing success. The powerful butt section of the R8 CORE provides stability, connectedness, and power to rock and fire those one-shot casts. With feel that extends to the smallest dry flies, R8 provides the touch to deliver efficient mends with intention and precision. Setting From subtle sips to streamer strikes, the amplified sensitivity of R8 enables fine nibble feel that triggers instant, instinctual reaction for trout sets or strip sets. FISH FIGHTING With a fish on, R8’s fusion of stronger backbone yet greater feel enables you to control your fish, even from tough structure, with touch and care. MADE IN THE USA We’re not a big faceless factory, but rather a workplace of craftspeople who design and build the world’s best fly rods and reels using our hands and hearts. We do it by sharing ideas and always asking the next question to find what can be done to make this better. Our rods are built one at time right here on Bainbridge Island, WA, following hundreds of meticulous steps and passing through 23 sets of hands. We’re out there fishing the same places in the same unforgiving conditions that you are. Craftsmanship is applied experience. Lifetimes of it.

(Gel Spun Backing z.B. Super Backing) bei der Salzwasserfischerei, um
das Risiko eines Fischverlustes zu minimieren.

Pike Classic Fly Rod # 9
Fly fishing for pike has been close to our hearts for many decades. In this respect, it is more than logical to offer our own series of rods for pike fishing. The PIKE fly rods have a medium-fast action and a modern look. The action also makes it possible to present large, bushy pike flies at a distance using a modern pike line. In addition, the rods have enough backbone to make effective strikes when fishing for pike and huchen. The modern aluminum reel seat is robust and the CLASSIC cork handle (only at the PIKE CLASSIC fly rod) looks fantastic and offers a great grip. We offer the PIKE rods in line classes #8, #9 and #10. The rods feature a premium guide ring and super hard chrome plated snake guides. The lace ring is intentionally slightly larger. It is delivered in a rod-reel combination tube made of Cordura. Maverick Fly Rod
SAGE MAVERICK Fly RodReady for any salty challenge thrown its way. Saltwater angling is more often a game of quick shots than long casts. Dropping a fly in front of a cruising tarpon 20ft off the bow can be the difference between success and failure during a day on the flats. In fact, most saltwater fisheries put a premium on getting the fly to the target quickly. Redfish meandering about Louisiana marshes, bonefish cruising marl-covered flats, and stripers slashing at bait all require a quick cast into “the zone” for high odds at a hookup. The quicker you can lay the fly down, the better the results. Sage’s new MAVERICK has been designed to maximize these quick-shot opportunities with a powerful tip section that drives the casting load down to more robust lower sections, making it easier to fire these quick efficient casts and helping the angler make the most of their finite opportunities. With a true saltwater specific backbone and design, the MAVERICK is ready for any salty challenge thrown its way. Fliegenschnüre zum Fliegenfischen im Salzwasser auf Bonefish & Co
In
sehr schlecht miteinander verknoten.

ELITE Bonefish sand/orange/blue

EMFORCER Fly Reel (tempest blue)
Enforcer Fly Reel (tempest blue)- made for big and strong fish!Born of the performance of our renowned THERMO big game bluewater reels, the Sage ENFORCER has been updated and fine-tuned for the power, reliability, and durability needs of the saltwater flats angler. Designed with peak performance in mind, the ENFORCER offers everything the flats angler needs in a reel, whether taming the explosive runs of double-digit Bonefish or putting the brakes on the freight train pull of triple-digit tarpon. Simply put, this is the ultimate saltwater reel for flats and heavy-duty fly-fishing applications. But battles on the flats are exercises in nuance and chaos, so we’ve beefed up the O-rings and drag plates for added durability, consistency, and reliability. Maximum drag has been increased by 50% over the ENFORCER’s predecessor, the SPECTRUM MAX; you’ll find eight pounds at the arbor in the 7/8 size, 15 pounds in the 9/10 size, and 17 pounds at the arbor in the 11/12 size. For saltwater anglers fishing heavy tippets who don’t want to let fish run continuously—or who care enough about their fingers to avoid palming fast spinning spools—this increased drag allows them to get most out of their reel without sacrificing any metacarpals. From the first time an angler stepped onto the flats with a fly rod, it’s been well known that reels can take a beating in this environment; sand, wind, and salt love nothing more than finding a cozy spot inside a saltwater reel. The ENFORCER is more durable than any of our saltwater flats reels, with larger drag discs to better disperse pressure and maintain the consistency of the power band throughout the fight by stabilizing inherent stopping strength. An all-new reel foot design with radiused corners prevents abrasion to leaders wrapped around the reel foot for storage—or in the unfortunate, but inevitable, moments when the line wraps around the foot in the initial chaos of the hookup.Take these features—the old standbys, the innovations—and wrap them up in a burlier and more rigid and rugged cold-forged aluminum frame and you have a reel that will stand up to the drops, knocks, and beatdowns that frequently occur in saltwater fishing situations.• 50% Higher Drag Than SPECTRUM Family• Enlarged and Improved Seals• Increased Durability• More Rigidity• New Radius Cornered Reel Foot Model Capacity Weight Outside Diameter Spool Width Maximum Drag 7/8 WF-7-F + 200 yds 20 lbs Backing 273 g 10,7 cm 2,7 cm 8 lbs 9/10 WF-9-F + 200 yds 30 lbs Backing 303 g 11,7 cm 2,9 cm 15 lbs 11/12 WF-11-F + 300 yds 30 lbs Backing 318 g 12,7 cm 3,2 cm 17 lbs

Super Backing 45 lbs (pink)
A few years ago we asked ourselves how we could make a good backing even better. After analysing the most important requirements for a backing we discovered that these were an even greater tensile strength - at a lower volume, a longer life, UV stability and very strong knot strength. We tested various materials and the breakthrough came when we combined a new braiding technique with a high performance thread. The result is the best backing that we know of. The main advantage is that even though it has a very small diameter, it has the quality to flatten out on the reel. This means no more cutting through itself! The tensile strength is 40 % higher, the diameter 35 % less than conventional backing and the fluorescent colour is easily visible. The tensile strength is 45 lbs (approx. 21 kg)! This may appear exorbitant to some Trout anglers but, even in this situation, our Super Backing does have the advantage of the fish feeling less water pressure on the line, during long runs and drills. When fly fishing for larger fish this advantage becomes even more apparent.
