Product information "Lead Wire"

Traun River Lead Wire – Reliable Weighting Material for Nymphs, Wet Flies, and Streamers

Traun River Lead Wire gives your flies the precise weight and balance needed to sink effectively and move naturally in the water. Whether you are tying delicate nymphs, compact wet flies, or powerful streamers, this wire provides consistent performance across all fly types and fishing conditions.

Why this lead wire is essential on your tying bench:

  • Effective sink rate: Helps your flies reach the desired depth quickly and stay in the strike zone — ideal for presentations close to the bottom or in deeper currents.
  • Flexible application: Simply wrap the wire directly onto the hook shank or apply it as a spiral to fine-tune weight distribution — suitable for a wide range of patterns and sinking levels.
  • Convenient for single or batch tying: The spool keeps your material organized and allows for clean, consistent wraps — perfect for tying multiple flies with uniform results.
  • Smooth, even wrapping: The wire lays flat and wraps tightly without creating uneven bulk — ensuring professional, streamlined fly bodies.

Recommended uses:

  • Nymphs that require quick descent and stable drift near the riverbed.
  • Wet flies and emergers that benefit from subtle weight for a natural sinking motion
  • Streamers and larger subsurface flies where added depth and stability are essential.
  • Patterns for stillwater or fast-flowing rivers where precise weight control makes the difference.

Available in multiple diameters. Whether you're crafting small, lightly weighted patterns or heavily loaded streamers, Traun River Lead Wire offers maximum control over depth, weight, and fly balance.

Order your spool now and give your flies the perfect underwater performance!

Calf Tail

Dense and stiff, great for posts and tails. The hair of the calf tail is used for many traditional flies. Even when tying many parachute patterns, it is essential. Salmon fly-tyers appreciate it, as do saltwater fly-fishermen who use it particularly in the production of Bonefish flies. It's fine texturing makes it very easy to process. Compared to the bucktail, the calf tail is more stiff and wavy, but give your patterns a realistic look and provide them a nice play in the water. Calf tail can be used for parachute posts of dry flies, wings of steelhead flies and is commonly used on bonefish flies. Well known patterns using calf tail: Crazy Charly, Gotchas, Clouser Minnow, Mickey Finn, Royal Wulff
