Zierhut Aurora Spitcane Fly Rods
Made in Austria
Andi Zierhut decided to build a split cane bamboo fly rod after reading an article, in a fly fishing magazine, on the “Sensitiv” cane rod that we also carried in our catalogue at that time.
More than twelve years later, after many setbacks and false starts, he had accumulated the knowledge and craftsmanship necessary to build his unrivalled bamboo fly fishing rods. Over the years he has put together a collection of specialized tools and machines – building a lot of them himself - that are necessary to craft bamboo rods. Andi Zierhut wanted to not only build the blank itself, but also all of the components that come with it, such as the reel seat and ferrules. His goal was to understand and learn the craft, letting go of his rods only when he was satisfied that they were absolutely perfect. Help was readily available in the form of friends and many elderly craftsmen such as a locksmith, turbine engineer, wainwright and wood turner.
Probably the most famous bamboo rod maker - and master cabinet makers - family, from Steyr in Austria, helped him to find his way. As a matter of fact when you hold an Andi Zierhut rod for the fist time you really are reminded of the unique tradition that was embossed upon bamboo fly rod crafting by the Austrian master.
Andi Zierhut builds fly rods that allow seemingly effortless casting and precise presentation. They have a modern action which not only makes the transition from graphite to bamboo seem easy, it also makes it a pleasure. Less gifted casters will find Zierhut rods to be very forgiving when it comes to casting idiosyncrasies. Building bamboo fly rods at this level of craftsmanship is incredibly time consuming. This translates into there being only a limited number of rods available each year, so please ensure that your order is placed as early as possible.
Zierhut Splitcane Fly Rod "Salmonia"
The Salmonia is an exquisitely crafted split cane bamboo fly rod featuring a medium-fast action. Comfortable in slow moving streams and small rivers, this rod is conspicuously light for a bamboo rod and is fitted with hand finished, custom fit, nickel silver ferrules and reel seat hardware. The spacer is turned by Andi Zierhut from burl walnut and the cork handle is formed from the finest hand selected cork rings available. Ultra light chrome snake rings wrapped with red silk and tipped in black complete the fittings on the noble Salmonia. The rod is finished with multiple layers of varnish. The Salmonia comes with a rod sack in an elegant anodized blue aluminium rod tube fitted with hand sewn leather caps.

Zierhut Splitcane Fly Rod "Aurora"
The Aurora is crafted by Andi Zierhut, as are all of his rods, to the highest possible quality. It is slightly faster than the Salmonia and comfortable to cast on swift river sections. It presents dry flies and small nymphs quickly and precisely, with an action that can be felt down into the butt. The Aurora is easy to cast and recommended for fly fishermen who have not had the experience or pleasure of fishing a bamboo rod. The wine red wraps harmonize perfectly with the elegant spacer crafted from burl Yew wood. Andi Zierhut says that this exotic wood is only available on those rare occasions when an avalanche tears down an ancient Yew tree in his native Tirol, he’s always happy when this then produces enough wood for a few reel seats, which then allows him to include a small piece of home in his rods. Highly polished fittings, hard chrome snake rings and a perfect cork grip round off the Aurora. The Aurora is supplied with a rod sack and an elegant anodized black aluminium rod tube fitted with hand sewn leather caps.
