Brands - Zierhut

Andi Zierhut decided to build a split cane bamboo fly rod after reading an article, in a fly fishing magazine, on the “Sensitiv” cane rod that we also carried in our catalogue at that time. More than twelve years later, after many setbacks and false starts, he had accumulated the knowledge and craftsmanship necessary to build his unrivalled bamboo fly fishing rods. Over the years he has put together a collection of specialized tools and machines – building a lot of them himself - that are necessary to craft bamboo rods. Andi Zierhut wanted to not only build the blank itself, but also all of the components that come with it, such as the reel seat and ferrules. His goal was to understand and learn the craft, letting go of his rods only when he was satisfied that they were absolutely perfect. Help was readily available in the form of friends and many elderly craftsmen such as a locksmith, turbine engineer, wainwright and wood turner. Probably the most famous bamboo rod maker - and master cabinet makers - family, from Steyr in Austria, helped him to find his way. As a matter of fact when you hold an Andi Zierhut rod for the fist time you really are reminded of the unique tradition that was embossed upon bamboo fly rod crafting by the Austrian master. Andi Zierhut builds fly rods that allow seemingly effortless casting and precise presentation. They have a modern action which not only makes the transition from graphite to bamboo seem easy, it also makes it a pleasure. Less gifted casters will find Zierhut rods to be very forgiving when it comes to casting idiosyncrasies. Building bamboo fly rods at this level of craftsmanship is incredibly time consuming. This translates into there being only a limited number of rods available each year, so please ensure that your order is placed as early as possible.
